One of the most common mistakes when using QR codes in print is making them too small. A QR code that looks perfectly readable on screen may become unscannable when printed at 1.5 cm on a business card. This guide covers the exact minimum sizes for every common print format, and the factors that determine how small a QR code can go.

What Determines Minimum QR Code Size?

The minimum usable size of a QR code depends on three factors:

  • Data density — more content (longer URLs, more characters) creates a denser QR code with more modules (squares). Denser codes must be printed larger.
  • Error correction level — higher error correction (levels Q and H) adds redundancy modules that make the code more robust to damage but also denser.
  • Print quality and medium — professional offset printing at 300 DPI can render smaller QR codes than a home inkjet printer or direct thermal label printer.

Minimum QR Code Sizes by Print Format

  • Business cards — minimum 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in). Use short URLs to minimize density.
  • Leaflets and A5 flyers — minimum 3 × 3 cm (1.2 × 1.2 in).
  • A4 posters — minimum 4 × 4 cm (1.6 × 1.6 in).
  • A2 / large-format posters — minimum 6 × 6 cm (2.4 × 2.4 in).
  • Product packaging labels — minimum 1.5 × 1.5 cm for simple codes; 2.5 × 2.5 cm for URL codes.
  • Billboards (scanned from a distance) — minimum 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in); more is better.
💡

Always add a quiet zone (blank white border) of at least 4 modules around the QR code. Our generator includes this automatically. Never let other design elements crowd the edges of the QR code.

Recommended Print Resolution

For physical print materials, use at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). To calculate the pixel dimensions needed:

Required pixels = physical size in cm ÷ 2.54 × DPI. Example: a 4 cm QR code at 300 DPI = (4 ÷ 2.54) × 300 = 472 pixels. Download our 600px PNG or use SVG (which is resolution-independent) for best results.

Why SVG Is Better Than PNG for Printing

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is a mathematical description of shapes, not a grid of pixels. This means an SVG QR code can be scaled to any size — from a postage stamp to a billboard — without any pixelation or loss of quality. Our generator offers SVG download for exactly this reason.

PNG files have a fixed pixel count. If you scale a 300px PNG to print at 10 cm, you will get a blurry, pixelated result. Always use SVG for professional print work.

Scanning Distance Rules of Thumb

  • The scanning distance is approximately 10× the QR code's physical size.
  • A 3 cm QR code can be scanned from about 30 cm (12 in).
  • A 10 cm QR code can be scanned from about 1 metre (3 ft).
  • For drive-by billboard scanning, size for the distance from road to billboard.

Testing Before Printing in Bulk

Always print a single test copy at actual size before placing a bulk print order. Test the printout with at least two phones — one iPhone and one Android — in normal lighting conditions. If the code scans reliably at arm's length, it is ready for print.
